Dreidel is a traditional luck game and one of the most famous symbols of Hanukkah. This game in Yiddish means “to turn around.” It has images of different letters of the Hebrew alphabet on each of the four sides. Dreidel is used to determine who will win the most “gelts” (chocolate coins wrapped in golden foil). Dreidel playing is a popular Hanukkah game that is played in Jewish homes around the world, and the rules may vary.

How to play

Give all players an equal amount of prizes. Prizes can be any small thing: coins, nuts, raisins, matches, and so on. Many players use gelts for this purpose. Contribute. Before each round, players place one prize in the center to create a prize pool. Every time the prize pool runs out, even if there is only one prize left, all players replenish it again.

Twist in turn dreidel

When it’s your turn, spin the dreidel once. A dropped letter determines whether you won, lost, or tied. By the letter dropped, the player must perform the following action:

1. Nun means “nisht” or “nothing.” Do not do anything.
2. Gimel means “gantz” or “everything.” Take away the entire prize pool.

4. Shin (outside of Israel) means “shtel” or “put in.” Peh (in Israel) also means “put in.” Put another prize into the prize pool. If you run out of prizes, you either quit the game, or you can ask for a loan from another player. Play until one person wins all the prizes!

Tips

• One option is to use chocolate instead of coins, and at the end of the game, you can eat all your winnings.
• If a player runs out of prizes, he either leaves the game or takes awards from another player.
• If the prizes in the prize pool have run out, all players are reset.
• In Israel, the letter “Shin” usually changes to the letter Pei, symbolizing the word “Peh”. Then the meaning of the phrase from these letters is “A great miracle occurred there”.
• In one of the popular versions of the game, any player who drops Nun loses and leaves the game.
• In one version of the game, you can double the prize pool when Shin drops and put one prize when Nun drops. Have fun with Dreidel!
